Bridging the gap betweek what is and what could be

A personal story

As a teenager, I picked up sewing because hardly any pants fitted perfectly. They were all off by an inch somewhere. Later on, I learned many things in life are 'an inch or two off,' and that's why we need designers' help to bridge the gap between what is and what could be. The following examples show how I wear my designer hat outside of work and bring that vision to the design of everyday things.

Transportation

I love what batteries have enabled us to build but wonder if the search for a better form should continue.

What these have in common?

Beside wheels

Lack of balance! They require active riding which makes them fun but also dangerous.

Why are we not all riding on wheelchair?

This 17th century invention is a perfect example of design versatility. It helps you move when you need to and turns to a seat when you don't.
Its great control makes it safe to be your ride almost in every public space.

If too worried about the stigma attached to wheelchairs…

Why can't we keep the same design principles and come up with a new form?

Plumbing

Are we running the pipes right? After building my first house, I learned that the construction technology has not changed much in the past several decades. Here is one idea that could change things a bit.

What is the general experience of a quick wash?

Always COLD, unless you are living in a modern multi-unit or a new built single-family home.

How modern homes have fixed this?

Old and still some of the new homes mix cold and hot water at the point of use. A new design has added a third line that's named return line which continuously circulates hot water through the house. It's inefficient but it gives you instant hot water.

What if we had an electric heat exchanger embedded into a faucet?

I wonder if it could help eliminating the hot and return lines.

Personal hygiene

Aside from their softer texture, toilet papers have been the same since late 1800. They certainly feel better but have we asked ourselves how to make them clean better?

We don't expect our counter-top to get clean with a dry paper towel.

Then why do we treat our end with a dry paper?

What if an attachment to the roll contained some solution that could optionally get applied to the paper?

Sometimes I'm wondering if I'm sitting on the biggest invention of the history!
